On the Way

The festival is held in one of the unique regions of Armenia and provides an opportunity to see the amazing historical and natural monuments and treasures. Here are presented several wonderful places we offer to visit while participating in the festival.

Makaravanq

Due to its restoration during the late-Soviet period, the legendary Makaravank is decorated with abundant ornaments, haut-reliefs and khachkars. It is located on the slope of Paytatap mountain, which is 3 km south-west of Achajur village in Tavush.

This monastic complex includes the main church, a vestibule and the 2nd ancient church. The road is not bad. Interestingly enough, the monastery can’t be seen at a distance unless you are near its gates. Church service has been held and the children’s choir of the neighboring village has been singing here on Saturdays and Sundays for already six years now.

Goshavanq

Goshavank or Nor Getik Monastery is located on the crossroads of Dilijan and Ijevan. The guides and the villagers can give information about the role and significance of the monastery in history, science and education. One of the most beautiful embroidered Armenian khachkars is located near the main church. The road from the highway to the monastery is covered with asphalt. On the way to the monastery visitors can admire the beautiful nature of Tavush region. Currently the monastery is under renovation; however, the entrance is open for all visitors.

There is a wonderful hiking trail from Goshavank to Parz Lake. It starts with a steep uphill of 150 meters, and is immediately followed with a stunning downhill. Visitors can enjoy the sound of the river and streams (there is a log to cross the river). There is no signage on this trail, so it is highly recommended you use the guide (in the monastery courtyard). Although there are relevant signs on the trail back, visitors have to overcome the final uphill which extends almost to the end of the trail (except for the last 150 meters).

Haghartsin

Haghartsin (Armenian: Հաղարծին) is a 13th-century monastery located near the town of Dilijan in the Tavush Province of Armenia. It was built between the 10th and 13th centuries (in the 12th under Khachatur of Taron); much of it under the patronage of the Bagrationi Dynasty.

The Bagratuni dynasty founded Haghartsin Monastery in the 10th century. It is 18 km north of the town of Dilijan, Tavush Region. According to historian Kirakos Gandzaketsi, the monastery was built in the 10th -13th century. The complex includes four churches: Saint Grigor (1244), Saint Astvatsatsin (1281), Saint Katoghike (12th century) and Saint Stephanos (1232), as well as two courtyards, refectory, prayer halls and khachkars (cross-stones).

Kirants

Kirants monastery is located on the left valley of Kirants Jur brook, which is 18 km north of Ijevan in Tavush. The monastery was built in the 13th century and has three brick churches. The main church Arakelots is decorated with frescoes, which contain Georgian-Greek inscriptions on them and come to prove that the church belongs to the Armenian Chalcedonians.

There is an old cemetery in the churchyard. The oldest surviving tombstone is dated 1698. There are few brick churches in Armenia. Kirants seems to be an island of peace and tranquility. We recommend visiting.
